MELANTER FETLAR FROM STEPENDS
(Munro)
Purchased
at 10 weeks from Stella Blackmore of the Melanter Kennels in the Highlands of Scotland he showed
early promise winning Best Puppy in Breed at Birmingham Championship Show at the age of 8 months and
by 9 months had gained his first Best of Breed.
At the prestigious Houndshow at Stafford that same year he won Best Puppy in Breed under Breed
Specialist Jolanda Huisman of the world famous Du Greffier Du Roi kennels in Holland and then Best
Puppy in Show under the well respected all round judge Ken Bullock. Sadly Ken Bullock is no longer
with us but his assessment of Munro will long be remembered here at Stepends. In his critique he
said, "I wouldn't pretend to have seen a great number of this breed but have judged many
thousands of puppies and this will long be remembered by me as one of the best"
Munro
continued his winning ways gaining Best of Breed at Scottish Kennel Club then Leeds .
The year 1999 was a big step for the breed. The breed had at last been scheduled breed classes at
Crufts. In an historic victory Munro became the first Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen to be awarded
Best of Breed at Crufts My thanks go to judge Kari Jarvenin from Sweden for this great honour.
Munro has continued to hold his own in the show ring, but is now proving himself to be a prolific
stud dog.
Mated to Bassbarr Aria from Stepends purchased from the famous Bassett kennels of Bill O'Loughlin,
in October 1999 she produced a litter of 11 puppies. One of these puppies Stepends Fortieviet chez
Debucher owned by Mrs. V. Phillips was entered at the Basset Griffon Vendeen World Congress run in
conjunction with the annual breed Championship show. Breed specialist from Holland John Hiddes
awarded Fortevoit Best Puppy in Breed. She then went on to win Best Puppy in Show. In 2001 Fortevoit
was Top Bitch in Breed, and her mother was awarded Best Brood Bitch in Breed by Dog World weekly.
Bath Championship Show was a real family affair. Stepends All Malt from the same litter was Best of
Breed and down to the last 7 in the Hound Group. Fortevoit was best bitch and Stepends Caperonich
reserve best bitch.
At home Munro is a joy to live with. His temperament is second to none and he is loved by all who
visit the kennels.
We think that Munro has made a significant contribution to the breed so far and at only 6 years old
still has much to offer. He is at limited stud to approved bitches.
Hip score 6 - 5
